Hisae/ヒサ絵 - It's OK To Forget/忘れてもいいよ
(Official Music Video)

I made this music video for “It’s OK To Forget / 忘れてもいいよ” in February 2020. This beautiful song, by the talented artist Hisae, is about dementia and how it affects the people around it. My grandma also suffered from dementia. Every time I flew to Japan to see her, I was struck by how much smaller, thinner, and weaker she had become, and how she had forgotten who I was. Creating this music video helped me face those experiences — the impact it had on both of us: my grandma, who no longer recognised me, and the strong woman she once was, whom I respected and always admired.

Making any music video is time-consuming and hard work, but this one truly healed me. My grandma passed away the day after I finished the project. She was 93 years old. It might be selfish to say, but part of me feels she was waiting for me to finish.

Hisae and I hope that anyone who listens to this song — especially those who have loved ones living with dementia — can find some comfort and healing in it.
